Sophisticated Neutrals
If like me you are drawn to sophisticated neutrals it’s probably because we want a style that reflects understated elegance, provides comfort and stands the test of time. You may find this is evident in the type of clothes you aspire to wear, the classic camel coat, the comfort of cashmere and that little black dress, these are often seen as good long lasting staples in our wardrobes, so why not exploit this captivating design concept and transform your home into a haven of tranquility and style surrounding yourself in a classic and elegant design aesthetic.
Muted Colours
Of course we have to talk about colour, the basic structure that will create a calm and timeless ambiance that underpins sophistication.
Among my favourites are Benjamin Moore White Dove and Natural Cream, a light griege that flatters both warm and cool colour schemes. Contact here>> if you would like a paint colour consultation.
Flawless Fabric Choices
A well considered choice of fabrics in your upholstery, curtain fabric and cushions with layered textures in silk, velvet, linen, wool and leather. Although these may sound expensive there are so many fabric choices now at different price points and always remember if you choose a good quality fabric it will last a very long time, maybe the hardest decision will be choosing the right colour and texture for your lifestyle.
The fabrics shown on this bespoke chair (below) are high contract use (meaning it won’t stain and is extremely hard wearing as there are pets and teenagers to take into consideration).
Minimalism
Embracing a minimalist approach to your design with clean lines and uncluttered spaces. Having too much stuff in the room won’t create a calm and serene living space if that’s what you wish to create. Keeping things simple and allowing furniture pieces to breath will highlight the beauty of each element in the room.
Balance
As with everything in life, creating a balance in your home will feel better to live in. You can maintain a balance between warm and cool tones within the neutral palette, which will feel inviting and harmonious. For example if you have cool toned walls like blues, grey or greens; warm up the space with warm metals in the way of gold or bronze framed art, gold lined lampshades or elements of brass or bronze accessories.
Elements of Nature
Natural materials such as wood, stone and plants not only add warmth and a connection to the outdoors, they are key in creating a sense of balance and serenity.
Functional Furniture
I love introducing furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes, like an ottoman in your living room which can be used as a footstool, storage and coffee table not to mention extra seating if required, prioritising functionality and practicality will maintain a clutter-free environment.
Timeless Beauty
We all know trends will come and go and as long as we appreciate that they will look tired and outdated over time, you may find it useful to use theses trends like I do, minimally. For example the colour ‘sage green’, yes I love it too and it could be argued it is a neutral however once you see it being used everywhere from wall colours to kitchens and bathrooms it tends to lose it’s appeal. I will use it as a wall colour because it can be painted over if my client gets bored with it or in small quantities like artwork, accessories, or cushions and throws but unless it has always been your favourite colour I wouldn’t suggest investing in a new kitchen colour or bathroom sanitary ware unless you have the budget to change with the times regularly.
Personal Touches
Adding your very own personal touch to your home will create a very unique space that allows your personality to shine and avoids that cookie cutter look, these can be family heirlooms, travel souvenirs or cherished artwork that holds special memories.
