This year Pantone colour experts have called it Viva Magenta which is described as “powerful and empowering, a colour that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all. Viva Magenta galvanises our spirt, helping us build our inner strength”

PAINT COLOUR - WILD WONDER, DULUX

As greens have proved popular last year and it’s not hard to understand why, as green is one of the easiest colours to live with, bringing nature and harmony into our living rooms. This green from Dulux is more of a yellow based green and more relaxed than the energising stronger greens.

"Our colour of the year 2023 is this beautiful colour called Wild Wonder," explains Marianne Shillingford (see link below), Dulux's creative director. "An amazingly organic shade that works with everything. It's like a cardamon pod, that's how I would best describe it – a beautiful golden, delicate green."

Inspired by nature this gentle tone could be considered the new Sage Green offering a soft approach to using hues that emulate nature within our homes.

PAINT COLOUR - RASPBERRY BLUSH, BENJAMIN MOORE

I’ve been using a lot of Benjamin Moore paints recently, I just love the range of colours and the coverage.

Not for the faint hearted, this invigorating colour will move you confidently into 2023.

Helen Shaw, director at Benjamin Moore explains. “For 2023, we felt ready to take the next step in coloUr – the time is right to take a confident step forward with our color selections to truly embrace the transformative power of color and paint.

“Raspberry Blush is the kind of colour that takes centre stage and wants to be noticed. Taking the plunge into deep, saturated, or chromatic colours can be daunting, especially when we’ve become so comfortable with all-neutral spaces. For some, bringing a saturated colour into the home may be done in a small gesture of colour, while for others the time has come to make a fearless colour statement.”

PAINT COLOUR - BEVERLY, FARROW & BALL

You will probably have seen the newly launched paint collection from Farrow & Ball last year.  This trending green has been very popular.

"I've developed a soft spot for many of our new colours, especially Beverly which is reassuring, uncomplicated, and full of depth, " says Charlotte Crosby, head of creative at Farrow & Ball(opens in new tab). The strong, clean mid-green works beautifully when paired with more neutral earthy tones of beige and hessian, making it the ideal shade to use as a striking feature wall that adds warmth without overwhelming.

PAINT COLOUR - TEMPLETON PINK, FARROW & BALL

Templeton Pink

Yes, another from the new collection.  It is more sophisticated than the current pinks and can be a lovely neutral to bring warmth into your home.  I’m looking forward to trying this out in the new year as I’ve always been a fan of Setting Plaster as a neutral.

PAINT COLOUR - MINK, PAINT & PAPER LIBRARY

The neutrals never go out of fashion and if you think of colours that you can taste like a caramel latte or hot chocolate, you are on the right track.

Andy Greenall, Creative Director at Paint & Paper Library(opens in new tab) says, 'Moving away from impersonal and stark bright whites, kitchen design schemes are becoming more considered, with schemes reflecting the wider interior aesthetic of a home. Richer, mood-setting colours are being used to great effect in combination across woodwork, cabinetry and walls.'

‘Mink’ is a wonderfully versatile, warm, pink-based neutral that adds depth and warmth to kitchen walls. Pair with the enigmatic, deep red-brown ‘Scarlet ‘n’ Rust’ for a sophisticated, timeless scheme.’

How we apply colour to our homes is changing too

We are becoming more confident when applying colour with a trend according to experts, called 'Colour Drenching' or ‘Colour Blocking’.  This method replaces the traditional white skirting board with mid strength tones in a colour closely related, to create a dramatic effect.

Using tone on tone colour is a continuing trend.  I particularly like this method of using a deep saturated colour on walls and skirting especially in a bedroom, this instantly relaxes you, wrapping you in feelings of warmth and security.

Do you feel inspired by any of the new colours for 2023?   Maybe you've already embraced some of them.  I think it's something to look forward to and maybe even pushes us out of our comfort zone and I think that's a good thing.
