Decorating your living room and how to pull it all together.  Help is at hand, you aren't alone, I hear this quite often and get how frustrating it is for you.  It can take long enough deciding on a paint colour and choice of sofa without finalising all the other details, the end result is to give up or decide to do it another day which never happens.  When what you really want is for it just to be finished and look right - am I close?

Let's dive in and get a few ideas going on how you can pull everything together in your living room.

Decorating Your Living Room & How To Pull It All Together

Colour

Identify the look you want to achieve.  What ideas do you have?  What are you drawn to on Instagram or Pinterest?  The overall theme you are drawn to, take note of this, as it will give you an idea of what to shop for, it could be colours like greens, blues or soft neutrals.  A minimalist clean look or warm and cosy interiors.

Don't forget your flooring and occasional furniture is colour too.  It's ok to mix wood finishes i.e. if you have oak flooring and doors/skirting you don't have to go with oak everything in your side tables etc., mix in other woods or metallics along the same style.

Styling

Areas to style in your room are coffee tables, console tables or side tables.  They don't have to be cluttered, just a few well curated pieces to add in with your chosen theme. Create these vignettes in colours or finishes of your chosen theme and echo this with your cushions, rug or artwork.  It doesn't have to be the exact colour, it could be a different tone, a co-ordinating colour, texture or metallic finish.

Don't forget to add some life to your scheme with potted plants or flowers.  Apart from looking good, it introduces nature and some life into your living room.

Balance

Add balance to your room by mixing various heights, perhaps a tall indoor plant or floor lamp.  Don't have too much furniture on one side of the room, balance it out with something on the other side.

I

Artwork - A common mistake is to have a small print on a large wall or the artwork is placed too high. Place the artwork at gallery height which is normally eye level.

Lighting

Don't skimp on lighting, having a good lighting plan will make or break your room and unfortunately it is the last thing that's considered when decorating a living room.

My simple rule of thumb is layering, using

  • Floor lamps

  • Table Lamps or Task Lighting

  • Recessed or Spot Lighting OR

  • Pendant light on a dimmer

Large Area Rug

Using a large area rug, place all furniture on  top or at the very least the front legs of the furniture, this will really help ground your living room, especially when used on wooden floors, avoiding that floating furniture look.  It also gives your living room that designer touch.
