Decorating With Accessories

Finishing off your room with accessories can be a little frustrating, not knowing how to group them together or in what context can seem like a lot of hassle when you don't know what you're doing.  Learn how to do this with these simple tips and avoid common mistakes.

Simple Tips When Decorating With Accessories

Walls

Determine which walls need artwork or wall decor.  Choose large artwork in proportion and scale to the wall or groupings of smaller pictures or wall art.

A large picture can give you instant drama in your chosen colour scheme.  If you are using smaller framed artwork, create cohesion by making all the smaller pieces have something in common such as the frame.  Or do the opposite and repeat the same image in different frames.

You don’t want to clutter the surface with mass produced items from the same shop/store.  Choose well, sometimes less is more.

Use:

  • Lamps

  • Coffee table books

  • Bowls

  • Flowers

  • Candles

  • Glass

  • Group items in odd numbers ie. 3 or 5 if smaller items

Fireplace

Typically the focal point in the room.  If you have artwork on other walls leave artwork out above the fireplace as this can be monotonous.

There are two kinds of balance you will want to achieve, symmetrical and asymmetrical.  For a formal setting you would usually use the symmetrical layout of accessories.

A mirror in the centre with two other items either side but instead of flanking a vase in each side, think of grouping smaller items in groups of 3 or 5.  So maybe a vase on one side and on the other,  group items to balance it out.

Rug

The most common mistake is to have a rug the size of a postage stamp in comparison to the room, plonked in front of the sofa or fireplace.

Ideally go large with all furniture on.

Really let your personality shine, mix and match with colour add textures that you love and complement your scheme.

Decorating With Accessories - Design Mistakes

Holding On To Knick Knacks

One of the biggest mistakes that people tend to make is holding on to items they’ve had for a long time and brought with them from their old house which doesn’t really fit in with their current decor.

Unless it holds significant or emotional value it shouldn’t be incorporated into a fresh design.

Too Matchy, Matchy

Shop Room Setting

Buying all of your accessories from the same shop can leave your room looking like you’ve borrowed it from the shop floor.  A complete range of accessories, say Next Home Decor, in the same finish or display, will look flat and uninteresting and won’t reflect anything about you.

Sometimes we get obsessed with a style or theme and end up going overboard.  Think back to the copper trend.  Less is more and won’t look overpowering.

Use current trends but remember to include other decor pieces that sit well together.

Less Is More

Avoid these design mistakes and choose accessories that won’t sabotage your entire home decor.

The goal to accessorising your room is to keep in mind the shape and size of the space they are filling.  Think about the colour scheme, materials and textures to create a cohesive and comfortable look and remember to have fun!
