Transform Your Home With Wellness Design

Simple Tips For A Healthier Happier Space.

Over the years, I’ve noticed a shift in home interior design consultations, with more clients focusing on creating spaces that nurture their overall well-being. Given how the pandemic has reshaped our lives, it’s no surprise that we’re all leaning into the idea of making our homes a haven for relaxation, self-care, and connection.

Whether it’s carving out a peaceful space for meditation or filling your home with greenery (has anyone else become an avid indoor plant parent?), wellness has become a key design focus. But did you know that your interior design choices can play a vital role in supporting your physical, mental, and emotional health? With a few simple, wellness-focused design tweaks, you can create a healthier and happier home that nurtures both mind and body.

Let’s dive into some easy tips that can make your home feel healthier and happier.

Let’s dive into some easy tips that can make your home feel healthier and happier…

Maximise Natural Light

The amount of natural light in your home plays a crucial role in boosting mood and energy. Simple design choices like sheer curtains, well-placed mirrors, and lighter colour schemes can help you make the most of available sunlight.

Use Non-Toxic Materials

Reducing harmful chemicals in your home environment is essential for health and wellness. Opt for furniture, paints, and cleaning products made from non-toxic materials.

My Recommendations:

  • Paint: I love Coat Paints for their gorgeous colour range and eco-friendly formula.

  • Cleaning Products: Purdy & Figg—not only do their products work wonders, but they smell absolutely amazing!

Incorporate Natural Elements

Bringing nature indoors is one of the easiest ways to boost wellness. Houseplants, natural fibers, and materials like wood or stone can create a sense of calm and connection to the outside world.

Improve Air Quality

Good air quality is crucial for a healthier home. Use air purifiers, essential oils, and open your windows regularly to keep the air fresh.

Optimise Your Sleep Space

Creating the perfect environment for sleep is essential. Think blackout curtains, cosy bedding, and keeping technology to a minimum in the bedroom.

My Recommendations:

  • Bedlinen: White & Green offers beautiful organic linens that are both affordable and sustainable.

We can all spare 5 to 10 minutes in the day, we owe it to ourselves and we deserve it!

Designate a Relaxation Area

We all deserve a little “me” time. Carve out a corner in your home for relaxation, meditation, or mindfulness. Whether it’s a cosy nook in the living room or a dedicated yoga space, taking just 10 minutes a day for yourself can make a world of difference.

Promote Physical Activity

Home gyms are more popular than ever, and with good reason. Setting up a small space for yoga or exercise can make it easier to stay active, especially during the winter months when it’s harder to leave the house.

If you’re based in Carrickfergus, why not join a class at The Yoga Loft, or take a brisk walk along the seafront for some fresh air?

Incorporate Colour Psychology: Colours have a huge impact on our mood. Blues and greens are calming, perfect for relaxation spaces, while yellows and oranges add energy to more active areas. (But steer clear of yellow in a baby’s room—it can make them feel unsettled!)

Fun Fact: Did you know blue is the preferred colour of most men, especially the darker hues, (personally I love blue). People are more productive in blue rooms and it also curbs your appetite!

Mindful Organisation

Keeping your home clutter-free promotes a sense of calm. If you struggle to find the time, consider hiring a professional organiser to help you declutter. You’d be surprised at how refreshing it can feel!

Personalise Your Space

Your home should reflect you. Personal touches, like family photos, artwork, and meaningful mementos, can turn your house into a space that truly makes you happy.

Wellness Rituals & Practices

Start with simple wellness rituals like morning meditation or evening wind-down routines. I found that dedicating just 10 minutes a day to self-care has had such a positive impact on my life—maybe it could work for you too!

Practice Aromatherapy: Use essential oils and diffusers to create a calming or energising atmosphere depending on the time of day. Try your local practitioner to introduce you to this for better results.

  • Introduce Wellness Rituals: Establish routines like morning meditation, evening wind-down rituals, or regular digital detoxes. If this sounds like too much time out of your day (as I did), start with 10 minutes, get up 10 minutes earlier or introduce it to your bedtime routine, I don’t even think about it now as I have found it so beneficial.

  • Encourage Healthy Eating: Set up a kitchen that promotes healthy eating habits, with easy access to fresh produce, and cooking spaces that invite creativity. Do you feel great after you’ve cleared out the fridge, cleaned it and stocked up with fresh healthy food for the week ahead? It always makes me feel I’ve started the week off well.

  • Promote Social Connection: Create welcoming spaces for gathering with family and friends, it’s feels good having friends and family over when you have the time and know that your home feels inviting.

Technology and Wellness

  • Limit Screen Time: We all know this one by now, but do we practice it. I banned my kids from having their phones at the dining table, they’ve forgiven me now :) Designate screen-free zones or times, particularly in bedrooms and dining areas, to encourage more mindful living.

  • Use Smart Home Technology: Leverage smart lighting, thermostats, and other technology to create environments that support your wellness goals, such as setting lights to dim in the evening for better sleep and a cosier atmosphere. Good lighting makes us feel more relaxed.

  • Soundscaping: Incorporate soundscapes or nature sounds in certain areas to create a tranquil environment, or use music to uplift and energize.

Sustainability and Wellness

Taking small steps towards sustainability—like reducing waste or investing in energy-efficient appliances—can make your home feel more aligned with your values, while also reducing your environmental footprint.

Mindful Consumption: Opt for high-quality, durable goods that align with your values, and reduce clutter. We often hear, “they don’t make furniture the way they used to”. It costs more, but investing in timeless pieces will see you through many years. I’m seeing a shift in clients buying cheaper furniture that needs replacing every few years, it’s just not cost effective.

Emotional and Spiritual Well-Being

  • Create a Gratitude Space: Designate an area for reflection, journaling, or practicing gratitude, perhaps with comfortable seating and soothing lighting.

  • Incorporate Art and Creativity: Include spaces or tools that encourage creativity, such as an art corner, musical instruments, or a writing desk.

  • Promote Positive Energy: Arrange furniture and decor in a way that promotes positive energy flow, possibly using principles from feng shui or other spatial planning philosophies. Did you know there are some schools of thought about a mirror facing the front door as bad energy, I found this feng shui article really interesting.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating wellness into your home doesn’t have to be overwhelming or costly. With a few thoughtful adjustments, you can create a space that not only looks beautiful but also nurtures your well-being. Whether it's by letting in more natural light, adding a few plants, or creating a cosy corner for relaxation, every small change can make a big difference. So, why not give it a try today? Your home should be your sanctuary—a place that supports your health and happiness every day. If you’re ready to take the next step, we’re here to help you create a home where you can feel your best.
