Tips To Stay Chill: Turn Your Bedroom into a Summer Sanctuary
Keep cool during the warm summer nights by embracing cool, calming colours and perfect window treatments for your bedroom ensuring a perfect nights sleep.
As the summer sun turns up the heat, keeping your bedroom cool can feel like a never-ending battle, sheets on, sheets off, one foot dangling out of the bed to cool down, does anyone else feel like this? Plus given the late arrival of summer to our Northern Ireland homes, it’s not something we think about, nonetheless, trying to sleep in the heat is still uncomfortable so why not indulge in a few simple changes to make your space feel lighter, more inviting, and cooler.
This month, we're focusing on how to use calming colours, ice cold sheets and elegant window treatments to transform your bedroom into a summer sanctuary.
Choose Calming Colours
The right colour palette can dramatically influence the mood of your bedroom. For a calming summer vibe, consider incorporating soft, cool hues, here are some of my favourites:
Pastel Blues and Greens: These shades evoke the tranquillity of the sea and the freshness of nature, helping to create a peaceful atmosphere.
Soft Whites and Creams: Opt for these timeless tones to brighten up your space and reflect natural light, making your room feel more spacious and airy.
Lavender and Lilac: These gentle purples add a touch of elegance and are known for their soothing qualities.
Breathable Bedding
Choosing the right bedding can make a significant difference in your comfort level:
Natural Fabrics: Materials like cotton and linen are breathable and moisture-wicking, helping to keep you cool throughout the night. Consider using lightweight sheets and duvet covers made from these fabrics.
Seasonal Changes: This really does work. Swap out heavy winter bedding for lighter options in the summer. A thinner duvet or a simple cotton blanket can provide the perfect amount of warmth without overheating.

Control the Light and Heat with Window Treatments
Effective window treatments can dramatically reduce the amount of heat that enters your bedroom:
Blackout Curtains: These curtains are designed to block out light and heat, keeping your room cooler during the day. They are particularly useful if your bedroom faces the sun during peak hours.
Shutters: Consider installing shutters, which helps keep your room in the shade and controls sunlight and reduces the amount of heat entering your room.
Sheer Curtains: If you prefer a lighter, airier feel, sheer curtains can filter light without completely blocking it. They allow for privacy while still permitting airflow and natural light, not to mention how pretty they are! I also like to layer curtains on two poles, with sheers for the inner curtains and heavier curtains for winter time.

Create a Cool Environment
In addition to window treatments and bedding, there are other ways to enhance the cooling effect in your bedroom:
Ice and Fans Combo: A simple trick is to place a bowl of ice in front of a fan. As the ice melts, the fan will blow cool air into the room, creating a DIY air conditioning effect. Sounds like a lot of hassle but I will try anything to cool down and it does work.
Cool Down Your Bed: Use an ice cold water bottle (yes, it sounds mad, but it works). This can provide immediate relief on particularly hot nights.
Reduce Clutter: A cluttered room can trap heat. Keep your bedroom tidy and opt for minimalist decor to enhance airflow and prevent heat accumulation. There are lots of benefits in de-cluttering your home and this is one of them.
Invest In Cooling Technology: Cooling mattress toppers and pillows are designed to regulate temperature and provide a cooler sleeping surface. It’s taken me a while to come around to this idea but clients have been raving about this.
I hope you’ve found these tips useful and if you incorporate them you will easily turn your bedroom into a cool, comfortable haven, even during the hottest summer days. Whether it's through enhancing airflow, selecting breathable bedding, (you won’t regret it) or controlling light and heat, each step can contribute to a more restful and pleasant experience. Enjoy a cooler bedroom this summer and reap the benefits of a well-prepared space. Here’s to those summer nights!
