Home Colour Selection

Home colour selection can be tricky and it's a question I'm asked all the time.  Faced with so many choices, I understand their frustration.  It's all very well looking at colours on Pinterest and in magazines but is it really you?  I've put together a few helpful tips to steer you in the right direction and feel a little bit more in control.

First of all, don't feel intimidated with current trends.  I know the new neutral is grey (and that's a whole other topic) but get comfortable with colours that you are drawn to.  This can be evident in the choice of clothes you wear (check out your wardrobe for inspiration, unless you're like me and almost everything is black  even though I'm drawn to blues….) or your favourite flowers.  By choosing a colour you like, even love, this means you won't tire of it easily.

If you aren't ready for full on colour then take baby steps.  I often find downstairs cloaks/bathrooms and dressing rooms are where people really let their creativity flow, which is a great idea because it will give you time to see if you really do like this colour and can live with it.

Although wallpaper was used in this downstairs cloaks, the built in cupboards and woodwork is painted in Farrow & Ball Tanner's Brown.

Pick A Colour

Now that you know which colours you like, say purple (but hold on, "I'm not painting my walls that colour all over!" I hear you say) maybe not but you may like a version of it, say a deep red purple like Farrow & Ball Brinjal or Pelt.

Make Notes

The next step is important, so make some notes and take time to think about the space you are decorating.  How do you use this room?  This gives you an idea on the overall look you want to achieve, cosy and intimate or bright and airy.  Maybe you work in this room or the kids use it for homeworks.  Is it north or south facing etc?  This will let you see how the light affects the colour.Rich dark colours would look perfect in a north facing cosy living room, only used in the evenings while curled up watching t.v. or perhaps a bedroom.  These areas work fantastically well with dark dramatic colours, and feels instantly relaxing as the enveloping colour starts to unwind the day.

Still unsure?

Then maybe you want to stay neutral (see my link to the perfect grey neutrals) and use colour in your accessories, cushions artwork etc.  This means you can easily change them if you get bored or decide that purple is not your favourite colour afterall ...http://www.heatherinteriordesign.co.uk/perfect-grey-paint-colours/
