Cool Summer Bedroom Ideas

Whilst we’re enjoying the heatwave at the moment, trying to get to sleep at night is another thing. I generally find it difficult getting off to sleep at the best of times so during the hot summer nights I’ve been making a few adjustments to my bedtime routine, if like me, you feel the same way I’m sharing a few ideas to help summer proof your bedroom that will keep you nice and cool during the summer months.

Temperature Control

It’s obvious to think of the temperature of the room by keeping the windows open at night or installing a fan (the whirring sound may be annoying though). According to experts it is better to close the windows during the day so as not to let heat circulate around the room all day. Open them at night to allow the cooler air in.

Duvet Know How

Swap out your winter duvet to a summer set and choose natural or breathable fabrics which will draw moisture away from you such as linen, bamboo and cotton.

Sheets in Percale cotton are made with a looser weave and is more breathable than Sateen sheets and go with a threadcount of 200-400 which means it is lightweight and single ply. This will keep our body temperature lower which is perfect for a good nights sleep, you know that blissful feeling you get when you turn your pillow over and it’s lovely and cool? That’s what it feels like.

Cold Water Bottles

You may not want to snuggle up to a cold water bottle, but place these in between your sheets for a lovely cool temperature while you sleep.

Do you know that plants are fantastic at keeping us cool?

Indoor plants will be your new best friend in summer as they consume hot air for their natural processes then release excess water into the air from their leaves which results in cooling themselves and their environment. Try rubber plants, Chinese evergreens, palms, mother-in-laws tongue and ficus benjaminas.

Cooling Mattress Toppers

I’d no idea there were gel-infused memory foam toppers that absorbs and disperses body heat! I absolutely love a mattress topper but I haven’t tried the cooling toppers yet, which also has ventilation holes to allow airflow and breathability so I just may give this a go myself, they are reasonably priced at £175 Dunelm for a King Size

Cool Spritzing

I find having a little water spray bottle beside the bed and spritzing really useful especially when I wake in the middle of the night. Neom is by far my favourite, have you tried this? Let me know of any others to try, I love a good spritz.

Window Treatments

Choosing the right window treatments in your bedroom is an important factor, wood venetian blinds or plantation shutters are great for adjusting the light filtering into the room but on top of that, wood acts as a natural heat conductor to help keep warm air out during the hot summer nights.

I love layering a large window with double curtains, specially if they are french doors, voiles are great at diffusing light and keeping a chill out if you want to leave windows and doors open all night.

If you hate the bright mornings interrupting your sleep before the alarm goes off, then completely block out light with blackout blinds and curtains.

Layering windows with black out roman blinds and double curtains of inner voiles with interlined outer curtains.
